Briefly at mid-afternoon today, there was an interval of beautiful, warm-hued, raking sunshine, that shone between an assortment of campus buildings to illuminate the copper-clad hump of the Nuffield Theatre. Curiously, and something I have never noticed before, it projected onto the Nuffield a triple shadow of the tall, minimalist sculpture in the foreground, actually made of four upright pillars.

ReplyDeleteI have to confess, I like the first one more though (especially, mumble, mumble, if you take a bit off the top and bottom and make it square). Is there any part of the Southampton campus which doesn't have some sort of temporary fencing?
Well, obviously I carry my own around, just in case there isn't any...

Okay, perhaps I shouldn't have used the word "hideous" anywhere near a photography blog. But you do know that I was winking repeatedly when I made that remark, right?
ReplyDeletePretty? Yeah, we like that too. Not necessary all or most of the time, though. Indeed, I do like the ladder/barrier combo. In fact would like to see it more clearly, and wonder who's it going to keep from climbing the ladder?
ReplyDeleteYes, very pretty. That ladder is a joy....and a complete mystery. Looks as though there is a real determination to prevent any "under ladder walkers" on campus.
Did you have to go to a lot of trouble to avoid smoke/steam or cranes appearing, Mike?

ReplyDeleteI think Debra is close to the truth here -- it is my belief that this is a ceremonial, apotropaic "ladder and barrier" installation. The ladder goes nowhere, the barrier prevents no-one from climbing.. Clearly religious or ritual in intention.
