Disneyfied

When I went out there on Monday, it appeared that Bristol's out-of-town shopping mall, Cribb's Causeway, had grown an enormous and fancy new building since my last visit, before Christmas.  It can't have been much use, however, as there's nobody and nothing inside, and a team of workmen were busily taking it down.

Mysteriously, the entire area around the empty castle had also been sprayed with artificial snow.  Some people just can't wait for the real thing, I suppose.  But then, there's the whole shopping mall experience in a nutshell.

... and the traditional New Year's lucky spotted hippo, then? Was there a film I missed?

He/she/it is a permanent resident -- there are several parked in the undergrowth. It seems to be a civic fad -- there are decorated rhinos all over Southampton. And, no, I have no idea why.

Well, here's the explanation for your rhinos, but I'm pretty sure that's a hippo in your pic -- for a start, rhinos never have blue spots.

Yes, the one in the picture is a hippo (hey, I know a hippo from a handsaw...). I meant there's a fad for "large decorated charismatic megafauna", generally with a forlorn "Please do not climb on the [megafauna]" notice. There are actually three BRONZE hippos outside Sainsbury's. I should photograph them before the scrap-metal thieves work out how to detach them...
