Ha! As you know, I've been back in Bristol a number of times recently, where I spent the years 1978-84, and this has resulted in Ian Dury popping into my head by instant association (esp. "New Boots & Panties"). Not to mention Elvis Costello, Graham Parker and various others -- a good time for music, the turn of the 80s.

I used to do a lot of caving whilst I was student and whilst it's hard work you can find new caves and passages in the UK, don't get too excited, they are most grotty, muddy tubes but you do get to name them. Album, book or song titles are often used and you can sometimes tell when a set of passages were discovered. There's a series of passages in the Gaping Gill system in N. Yorkshire named after characters in Lord of the Rings (late 60's) and I think somewhere in the Dan yr Ogof system is a New Boots & Panties passage (late 70's?)

Gavin,

I'm afraid I must curb my enthusiasm for naming a new muddy tube -- nothing (and I mean NOTHING) would induce me to go caving. I get panicky even in a tourist cave with lights, steps, and everything. I didn't mind Lascaux, but then that's a replica without tons of unstable rock waiting to crash down and crush you into nothing...
